5 Decorating Mistakes
Hanging pictures can be tricky, especially if there is no furniture underneath to help anchor and guide your eye as you hang them. A good rule of thumb is to hang pictures 6-10 inches above furniture. 8-10 inches is probably best, but use your judgment as you place them, and see what looks best for your room!
Now, if you have no furniture underneath your pictures, (for example, in the hallway) hang your pictures around 5 feet above the floor. If they are hung too high or too low, the wall will look funny. As always, use your best judgement as you’re hanging, and if it doesn’t look quite right, make some adjustments!
Here are some of my favorite picture frame sets from Amazon:
This is a very common one! Pull that sofa out from your wall! Even if you are in a small space, giving 2-3 inches between the sofa and the wall will help the room look more intentional. This is important especially in a large room! With your furniture away from the wall, you can create intentional seating areas that are cozy and purposeful.
This can be a hard one fore me! It’s so easy to collect a lot of cute little accent pieces, but when there are lot’s of littles around, the space begins to feel cluttered instead of styled. Try to group things together in three’s, and don’t be afraid to take things away!
When you hang your drapes, you ideally want the bottom to hang about 1/2 inch above the floor. BUT, if I had to choose, I would rather have my drapes be too long, and puddle a little bit on the floor, than have them be too short!
Here are some of super cute drapes that would brighten up any space!
Oh I LOVE rugs! So much 🙂 When you have a rug in a room, make sure that it is anchored, meaning that it touches the furniture. Ideally, you want to have at least the front legs of all the furniture on the rug, but if not, have it at least touching them. Don’t have it just floating in the middle of the floor!
Here are some rugs I’m loving:
The very best piece of advice I could give anyone is to make a design plan for the room you’re decorating! This way you can be sure of the style and direction you want to go before you start buying things. AND, it will save you money! You will make waaaaaay less impulse buys that you later regret, and when an item you know you want goes on sale, you can snag it at a great price!
Here are a couple of examples of a design plan:
